New Leadership Series from ASA San Antonio

 

The ASA San Antonio Master Builder Series is a 6-week advanced program designed to equip industry professionals with the essential skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively in the dynamic and complex construction sector. This series brings together experts and skilled professionals to provide critical insights in leadership, management, technology innovation, strategic planning, and risk mitigation tailored specifically for subcontractors in our industry.

The Master Builder Series is a three-level comprehensive program, where the course work is designed to build on itself.  

​

Level 1: Foundations is designed to cover basics of construction business management, ensuring mastery of fundamental concepts necessary for running a construction business successfully.  

​

Level 2: Next Level will build on Foundations and provide a deeper dive into the intricacies of the six modules, enhancing the participant's skills and knowledge for better management and operational efficiency.  

​

Level 3: Top Out is the pinnacle of the program.  This level prepares the participants to master the art of construction business management focusing on strategic thinking, leadership, and cutting-edge practices and risk mitigation.  

​

Participation in each class is exclusive, and program participants must commit to attend all courses in person and complete course work as mandated by the curriculum.

Sep 12 - SOFT SKILLS presented by Grace Uwizeye-Allen, Graceful Etiquette

In our comprehensive soft skills course, participants will delve into essential topics crucial for professional success. We explore dynamic team building strategies that foster collaboration and synergy within diverse teams. Effective communication for leadership equips learners with the skills to articulate vision and inspire others. Managing complex personalities in the workplace addresses interpersonal dynamics, conflict resolution, and fostering positive work environments. Expert strategies for managing diversity empower individuals to navigate cultural differences and leverage unique perspectives for organizational growth.

Sep 19 - FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & JOB COSTING presented by Heather Martin, Yantis Company 

This module provides a foundational understanding of financial management and job costing in the construction industry. Attendees will be introduced to accounting principles and cost controls, essential for maintaining financial discipline. The course covers the basics of understanding financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, to help manage working capital effectively. Additionally, participants will learn the fundamentals of job costing, enabling precise tracking and allocation of costs to specific projects, ensuring accurate budgeting and financial oversight.


Sep 26 - “TO BID OR NOT TO BID” presented by Tom Freund, Comfort-Air Engineering & Primo Plumbing

This module provides a foundational understanding of the bidding process in construction. Attendees will be introduced to essential estimating skills, learning how to accurately assess project costs and prepare competitive bids. The course includes an overview of insurance regulations relevant to bidding, ensuring compliance and risk management. Basic contract requirements will also be covered, emphasizing the importance of understanding legal obligations and terms to successfully navigate the bidding process and secure contracts.


Oct  03 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT & SCHEDULING presented by John Campbell, Guido Companies

In this course, participants will gain vital skills essential for overseeing successful projects. From keeping meticulous daily logs to effectively managing budgets, understanding written directives, and introducing change orders, every aspect of project execution is covered. Basics of manpower requirements are explored to optimize resource allocation, while an overview of the critical path method ensures efficient project timeline management. Additionally, participants will learn strategies for building cohesive teams based on complementary skill sets, fostering collaboration and maximizing productivity throughout project lifecycles. This course equips individuals with the tools needed to navigate complexities and deliver projects on time and within budget.


Oct  10 - CONSTRUCTION LAW presented by Bethany Beck, Sanderford & Carroll

This module provides a basic overview of construction law principles critical for navigating legal aspects in construction projects. Attendees will be introduced to liens and bonds, essential for protecting payment rights and ensuring project completion. Basics of project documentation will cover the importance of maintaining accurate records to support claims and mitigate disputes with a focus on email etiquette. An overview of submittals and communication will emphasize the proper handling of project documents and information flow. Participants will also learn about basic contract clauses to be aware of, including indemnity, dispute resolution, and termination clauses, ensuring compliance and mitigating legal risks throughout project life-cycles.


Oct  17 - TECHNOLOGY & HR  presented by Paloma Atkinson, Broadway Bank & Cyndi Mergele, RSM US LLP

This module covers essential technology and human resources skills necessary for construction professionals. Attendees will learn how to effectively use Outlook email and calendar systems to manage communications and scheduling efficiently. An introduction to Adobe and Excel will equip participants with basic software skills essential for document management and data analysis in construction projects. Basics of human resources specific to construction will be discussed, including recruitment, training, and compliance with labor laws. The module will also highlight important do's and don'ts in HR practices, emphasizing ethical behavior, confidentiality, and fair treatment of employees to foster a productive and compliant work environment.
