New Leadership Series from ASA San Antonio
The ASA San Antonio Master Builder Series is a 6-week advanced program designed to equip industry professionals with the essential skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively in the dynamic and complex construction sector. This series brings together experts and skilled professionals to provide critical insights in leadership, management, technology innovation, strategic planning, and risk mitigation tailored specifically for subcontractors in our industry.
The Master Builder Series is a three-level comprehensive program, where the course work is designed to build on itself.
Level 1: Foundations is designed to cover basics of construction business management, ensuring mastery of fundamental concepts necessary for running a construction business successfully.
Level 2: Next Level will build on Foundations and provide a deeper dive into the intricacies of the six modules, enhancing the participant's skills and knowledge for better management and operational efficiency.
Level 3: Top Out is the pinnacle of the program. This level prepares the participants to master the art of construction business management focusing on strategic thinking, leadership, and cutting-edge practices and risk mitigation.
Participation in each class is exclusive, and program participants must commit to attend all courses in person and complete course work as mandated by the curriculum.
LEVEL TWO SESSIONS
Session 1 - SOFT SKILLS presented by Grace Uwizeye-Allen, Graceful Etiquette
This soft skills module is designed to empower professionals with the tools to communicate effectively, build relationships, and adapt to diverse workplace dynamics. Topics include advanced negotiation and public speaking techniques, addressing generational communication gaps, strategic networking for growth, and leveraging attire to align with various professional occasions. A follow-up discussion will delve into understanding personality types to anticipate and navigate potential challenges, fostering proactive problem-solving and stronger interpersonal connections.
Session 2 - “TO BID OR NOT TO BID” presented by Tom Freund, Comfort-Air Engineering & Primo Plumbing
and Greg Wiatrek, Alpha Insulation & Waterproofing
This construction bidding presentation equips professionals with the knowledge to make informed decisions and submit competitive, well-prepared bids. Topics include identifying ideal jobs and clients, understanding critical pre-bid considerations beyond the scope of work, and planning effectively for federal projects, including workforce requirements, certified payroll, executive orders, and school-specific considerations. Participants will also learn the importance of thoroughly reviewing Division 1 and contract requirements, evaluating cash flow capacity, and avoiding projects driven by vanity or prestige. This comprehensive approach helps ensure bids are strategic, compliant, and aligned with organizational capabilities.
Session 3 - CONSTRUCTION LAW: CLAIMS presented by Bethany Beck, Sanderford & Carroll
This construction claims session provides critical insights into managing and resolving disputes effectively. Topics include understanding scheduling and notice requirements, change orders, and precursor work, all heavily dependent on the terms of the specific contract. Participants will also learn about the nuances of liens, including intents, letters, and affidavits, as well as bond claims and their processes. Emphasis will be placed on robust documentation practices, leveraging technology for record-keeping, and the importance of maintaining independent records from jobsite meetings, rather than relying solely on the general contractor’s minutes. This module equips professionals to protect their interests and navigate claims with confidence.
Session 4 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT & SCHEDULING presented by John Campbell, Guido Companies
This session focuses on the essential skills and practices needed to successfully oversee construction projects. Topics include managing budgets effectively, understanding CCDs (Construction Change Directives) and written directives, and properly handling T&M (Time and Material) tickets. Participants will gain insights into creating and monitoring schedules, manpower loading, durations, and milestone tracking while ensuring coordination of predecessor work. The session also covers the importance of reviewing revised schedules for impacts, such as compression or delays, and maintaining clear communication about changes. Additionally, attendees will learn best practices for actively participating in construction meetings to drive project success.
Session 5 - FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & JOB COSTING presented by John Farrow, Bartlett Cocke General Contractors
This module provides a basic overview of construction law principles critical for navigating legal aspects in construction projects. Attendees will be introduced to liens and bonds, essential for protecting payment rights and ensuring project completion. Basics of project documentation will cover the importance of maintaining accurate records to support claims and mitigate disputes with a focus on email etiquette. An overview of submittals and communication will emphasize the proper handling of project documents and information flow. Participants will also learn about basic contract clauses to be aware of, including indemnity, dispute resolution, and termination clauses, ensuring compliance and mitigating legal risks throughout project life-cycles.
Session 6 - TECHNOLOGY & HR presented by Paloma Atkinson, Broadway Bank & Cyndi Mergele, RSM US LLP
This session explores the intersection of technology and human resources to enhance efficiency and workforce management in construction. Participants will learn advanced techniques for leveraging tools like Outlook, Adobe, and Excel to streamline communication, documentation, and data analysis. The session also addresses unique HR challenges in the construction industry and provides strategies for implementing effective HR practices, from compliance and employee engagement to fostering a productive and inclusive workplace. This combined focus on technology and HR equips attendees to optimize operations and build stronger teams.
